A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
